Self-Sufficiency Standard for West Virginia for 2005
The first Self-Sufficiency Standard (SSS) report was released in 2002, and the project was lead by West Virginia Community Voices Partnership. The SSS measures how much income is needed for a household of a given composition in a given place to adequately meet its basic needs without public or private assistance. The study is reported to the speaker of the House of Delegates, the president of the Senate, the WV Workforce Investment Council, and the Legislative Oversight Commission on Workforce Investment and Economic Development every two years. The Interagency Collaborative Team (ICT) that consist of representatives from state agencies that touch the WORKFORCE West Virginia system coordinates development of the SSS for the state. Dr. Diana Pearce, director of the Center for Women's Welfare at the University of Washington conducted the research and wrote the report. There are various ways the Standard can be used as a tool for policy analysis, counseling, performance evaluation, evaluate economic development and research.
